Anaesthesia in the prone position.

چکیده
Prone positioning of patients during anaesthesia is required to provide operative access for a wide variety of surgical procedures. It is associated with predictable changes in physiology but also with a number of complications, and safe use of the prone position requires an understanding of both issues. We have reviewed the development of the prone position and its variants and the physiological changes which occur on prone positioning. The complications associated with this position and the published techniques for various practical procedures in this position will be discussed. The aim of this review is to identify the risks associated with prone positioning and how these risks may be anticipated and minimized.

Haemodynamic effects of the prone position: a comparison of propofol total intravenous and inhalation anaesthesia.
The haemodynamic changes of the prone position were investigated in 40 ASA I-II patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery. Patients were randomly assigned, following propofol intravenous induction, to receive maintenance of anaesthesia using either isoflurane 1-1.2% in air or target controlled propofol 3 microg.ml(-1) infusion. Measurements of non-invasive blood pressure, heart rate and cardiac ...
متن کاملModified prone position to dissect the popliteal fossa
INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the prone position is used for dissecting the popliteal fossa, which requires endotracheal intubation. Access to the airway in this position is limited, hence the complications. It is not surprising that the prone position is not favoured by the anaesthetists, especially in patients with a high body mass index. We describe a safe and novel alternative to the prone po...
متن کاملIs Prone Position One of the Symptoms of Childhood Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?
Background & Aims: The aim of the present study was to find whether prone position is one of the symptoms of childhood gastroesophageal reflux disease or not. Method: In this prospective case-control study, 200 children with gastroesophgeal reflux disease (case group) and 210 healthy children (control group) were studied between 21 march 2009 and 21 march 2011. Data gathering was performed by a...
متن کاملBiomechanical simulations of scoliotic spine correction due to prone position and anaesthesia prior to surgical instrumentation.
BACKGROUND The positioning of patients during scoliosis surgery has been shown to affect the scoliosis curve, yet positioning has not been exploited to help improve surgical outcome from a biomechanics point of view. Biomechanical models have been used to study other aspects of scoliosis. The goal of this study is to simulate the specific influence of the prone operative position and anaesthesi...
متن کاملComparison of Effect of Prone and Right Lateral Positions on Gastric Residual Volume in Preterm Newborns
Background: Nutritional problems in premature newborns are of great importance for their development. In this regard, the neonatal positioning during and after feeding can have a significant effect on their nutritional tolerance. Therefore, the present study was conducted to compare the effect of two positions (i.e., prone and right lateral) on gastric residual volume ...
